Alcester Memorial Hall

Warwickshire

Situated in Warwickshire, this magnificent Grade I listed Town Hall was built in 1618, with the timber framed top floor constructed in 1641. The ground level arches were used for traders to sell goods such as milk and cheese.

The building was used for social justice. Offenders would  be held in the basement prison, sometimes referred to as 'The Hole'.  The cell was used as the town lock-up until 1850. In 1873, part of the ground floor was converted to serve as the town's Magistrate's Court. They would hear cases involving minor theft, assaults and drunkenness. The town stocks were stored here, ready to be wheeled out when needed.

During the First World War, the building was used as a hospital. In 1919, the town raised enough money to purchase the freehold, and the building was renamed the Alcester War Memorial Town Hall in memory of those who died.
