Mill Street Barracks,
St Helens

The Mill Street Barracks was built in 1861 as the headquarters for the 47th Lancashire Rifle Volunteer Corps. During its long history, Mill Street Barracks has served as an army base, drill hall, a hospital and a morgue.
During the early 20th century, the Barracks became the base for the 2nd Volunteer Battalion Prince of Wales' Volunteers (South Lancashire Regiment). During each World War, it was used as a morgue for fallen soldiers and those killed during bombing raids over the UK.
After World War One, the Barracks was an isolation ward for patients with Tuberculosis. In 1940, The Barracks became the base for 61st Searchlight Regiment of the Royal Artillery (5th Battalion South Lancashire Regiment), and was decommissioned as a military unit in 1969.
