Sleap Airfield

Located 10 miles north of Shrewsbury, this atmospheric airfield has seen it's share of dramatic events over the years.

Built in 1942, RAF Sleap (pronounced 'Slape') was the primarily the host to No. 81 Operational Training Unit, amongst others. They completed both training and active missions during wartime from this base. Sadly, as with many wartime locations, there are confirmed deaths at this site. Many stories of apparitions and disembodied voices have been reported since.

Although a busy and welcoming airfield in the day, Sleap takes on a different atmosphere once the last flights have landed for the night and darkness descends.

Alcester War Memorial Town Hall, Warwickshire

This magnificent Grade I listed town hall was built in 1618, with the timber framed top floor constructed in 1641. The ground level arches were used for traders to sell goods such as milk and cheese.

The building was used for social justice. Offenders would  be held in the basement prison, sometimes referred to as 'The Hole'.  The cell was used as the town lock-up until 1850. In 1873, part of the ground floor was converted to serve as the town's Magistrate's Court. They would hear cases involving minor theft, assaults and drunkenness. The town stocks were stored here, ready to be wheeled out when needed.

During the First World War, the building was used as a hospital. In 1919, the town raised enough money to purchase the freehold, and the building was renamed the Alcester War Memorial Town Hall in memory of those who died.

Gresley Old Hall, Swadlingcote

Gresley Old Hall is a Grade II listed building, situated in Church Gresley, Swadlincote. The Hall was originally built in Tudor times, and remained throughout Georgian and Victorian periods, through to the current day.  It was built in 1556 by Sir Christopher Alleyne.

Over time, the house has been sold and exchanged many times. It spent time as a farm, and gradually fell into decline until it was converted into tenements by 1895. In 1905, it was believed to have been divided into cottages. During the 1920s-1930s, further restoration was completed on the house, with stones used in the kitchen fireplace believed by some to be taken from the ruins of Gresley Priory.

It lay derelict for some time after that, and was purchased in 1953 by the National Coal Board, renovated and leased to the Miners’ Welfare Scheme. Renovations were completed in 1959.

Signs of fire damage can still be seen today.
